Must-Have Guidebooks:

  • Adirondack Rock is the most complete, up-to-date record of climbing spots in the ‘Dacks.  Interestingly, the Adirondacks have been getting more attention as of late for the world-class climbing being developed there… especially the boulders…
  • I once heard someone say “Bouldering in the ‘Gunks is like masturbating in a whorehouse.”  That person is no longer with us, because I proceeded to grab their skull and crush it with the mutant hand strength I attained from pulling on The Boxcar Arete.”Bouldering in the Shawangunks” is authored by Ivan Greene and Marc Russo, who did much of the development of the boulder problems in the region.  While this is the second edition, it does not contain some of the newest bouldering areas that were recently developed in the ‘Gunks.   However, it has an insane amount of info on everything else – I own it, and use it nearly every time I’m in the ‘Gunks.
  • For those who are into trad and toproping in the ‘Gunks… which is what it’s known for, here are the definitive guides to all of them, by Dick Williams. The two guidebooks are divided into (1) The Trapps, and (2) The Near Trapps and Millbrook
    • …The definitive guide to the Trapps
    • …The definitive guide to the Near Trapps and Millbrook
