Climbing with Mom, Part One: Meet MaryLouise
Posted in Random on March 18, 2010
My mother is an amazingly loving person, and since she hasn’t seen me in a long time, she decided to fly into Logan (which in itself, is enough to prove one’s selfless love for another), and book a hotel room in Auburn, MA so she can hang out with me this weekend. Now, you should understand that my mother is anything but an “outdoorsy” person. Quite the opposite. She enjoys shopping, going to spas, sunbathing on exotic beaches, and talking about girlie things, like shoes and feelings. She has no clue what climbing is all about, and really doesn’t understand what I do very well. I plan to remedy that.
Unbeknownst to her, I have planned a busy weekend of climbing-centered activities, including viewing a sport climbing comp at Central Rock Gym, bouldering (possibly sport climbing) at Farley Ledge, and maybe even some Lincoln Woods action. I know that there may be some whiny complaints, but hey, sometimes you need to endure a little of that to create a memorable weekend. Also my mother has a talent for generating unbelievably hilarious quotations by accident, especially when she’s annoyed, so I plan to bring my voice recorder and DSLR to document things.
And don’t worry about her. To smooth things out, I’m going to treat her to some Faneuil Hall/Prudential Center shopping, and delicious North End dining at Trattoria Il Panino, where I will undoubtedly get some Penne Vodka all up in my ‘stache.
