It’s hard to admit to myself that I’m a “fan” of anyone. I’m just a generally competitive person, and I think that saying you’re a “fan” acknowledges an inherent superiority of the object of your fandom. So here goes.

I’m a fan of Alex Honnold. Here’s why:

SCS Divisionals – June 11-12

I’m making a video of SCS Divisionals at the new Central Rock Gym in Hadley, MA. The competition will be taking place on June 11-12, and will be a great way to showcase this badass new gym. I would link to the USAC SCS info page, but honestly, it’s horrible. Looks like something a 10-year-old put together in 1994.

Anyways, I’m doing some things with the video that, to my knowledge, haven’t been done before. New angles, new music, new athletes. I might even call it a “production.”

~~Everyone’s favorite grade-school crusher, Ashima Shiraichi will be there,~~ along with many others who will be putting up the hardest routes in the world in the coming years… when they get their drivers’ licenses.

Kyle McCabe is head setter. He’s kindof a big deal.

The video should be done sometime in the week following the competition.

Alex Honnold Blowing More Minds

A bit of a departure from our usual hard bouldering.

It’s been a long, long time since climbing footage has completely knocked my socks off, but this amazing expedition into the middle of the desert, in Chad, Africa did the job.

I would’ve paid money to see this footage, so kudos to the athletes, the photographers, and The North Face for making it all possible.

When I heard the news of yet another v15 succumbing to the steel talons of Daniel Woods, I thought about quitting climbing…then I watched the video and I immediately went to the gym to train. Via DeadPointMag (<-read the DPM article – they have badass pics too), via Desnivel.com, I couldn’t wait to post this sick video. Apparently this is the First BBK Psicobloc Masters Competition (el I Master Psicobloc BBK), and I have no idea what organizations those are, nor what significance they hold, but this is the most badass competition I’ve ever seen, no offense ne2c. This is next-level.

Oh, and Chris Sharma won. Again.

Climbing…Fuck, its awesome. Especially when watching the journey of struggle and success. It never gets old. And it doesnt even have to do with the grade. Ever watch a newbie battle to the death on a v2? Its often times one of the more dynamic theatrical events. Life’s obstacles incarnated. In this case, the grade is v11, and a powerful one at that.

My good friend, Cliff, had been going on and on like a teenage girl about a climb in LC, Gunks known as Solution. So, a couple weekends ago he showed me the goods, and I was not disappointed. It was the epitome of my favorite boulder problem: a horizontal, compression slapping, heel/toe hooking burl-fest. He had had a couple of sessions prior to this trip and had a few creases to iron out. But by the end of the day, it was clear it would be sent in a session or two! To this date he had only one v10 under his belt. It was clear it was going to be a raging struggle, but we saw the glimmer of possibility.

Like a little stubborn badger, Cliff went at this thing! Hiking out in the rain to scrub the holds. Seshing the shit out of it. It wasnt until the following weekend that he sent and, like we so often hear in these epic tales, it was when he least expected it.

It was Saturday. I was in LC with Nick, Buzz, and Alessa. We hiked up to the boulders and met Matt Bosley, who was there to try the unrepeated sit start, Resolve(v14). We were balls deep projecting when Cliff came around the corner. He said he “felt like shit” but would give it one go. Can you guess what occurred? He ripped it a new asshole. He cruised the thing. As you will see in the vid, upon finishing the problem his brain couldnt process what had occurred. He was more shocked than excited. He attributed it to his new pair of climbing pants he had purchased the day before. And I totally agree. It had nothing to do with iron will and determination. Also included is Boz getting ooh so close on Resolve. Enjoy.
